Gee-Gees Women’s Volleyball is a long standing program rich in tradition and success. We believe in personal accountability in each student-athlete; that each player should be treated fairly and act in a responsible and mature fashion – always reflecting positively on the Program. Respect for our teammates, coaches, university, program and the Jersey we wear is crucial to our success. Our dedication to prepare for training, academics and competition defines who we are. Our ‘Gee-Gee Attitude’ keeps us working hard, and together. This united atmosphere allows us to set high goals – to dream BIG.
The coaching staff is a team of committed, successful coaches deeply rooted in the Gee-Gee Women’s Volleyball Program. Along with a full list of specialty assistant coaches, Head Coach Lionel Woods and Head Assistant Coach Ling Lee bring complementing perspectives, theories, and ideas from their combined thirty plus years of coaching experience. Both strive annually to find new ways to push each player to her potential on and off the court. They believe every year brings new challenges and that each team is unique and requires a different approach. Each athlete’s individual skill repertoire, skill efficiency, mental toughness and game tactics are developed to allow for provincial and national team success as well as possible international opportunities upon graduation. The entire coaching staff works to challenge the team in every way to create a unified whole so that come competition time, Gee-Gees Volleyball is a strong team capable of reaching its goals.
We believe that our year-round off court training is essential to our success on the volleyball court. Head strength and conditioning coach, Lenny Sabourin, believes in ‘Long-Term Athlete Development’. He focuses on educating and teaching the fundamentals of strength and conditioning while improving technique, and eliminating imbalances. He challenges each individual to push the envelope – to be the best they can be. He stresses a purpose to each training session rather than, “training just to get through it”. The hard work we put in our year-round physical training allows us to push harder when we practice, and compete longer than most.
Academic Excellence and Support
Gee-Gee volleyball players are ‘student-athletes’. We are students first, athletes second. Our program promotes the development of each student-athlete as a well rounded adult capable of succeeding in all challenges while in university, upon graduation, and throughout life. We are proud of our academic record as a team and as individuals. Gee-Gees Volleyball has been named ‘Academic Team of the Year’ multiple times at the University of Ottawa and has had 43 Academic All-Canadians in the program’s history. Gee-Gees Women’s Volleyball and the University of Ottawa has committed full athletic bursary funding for every player eligible on the annual team roster. Paired with a variety of complimentary Financial Assistance programs, these athletic bursaries go a long way to alleviating the financial burden of attending university while committing 20 plus hours a week to playing volleyball.
