uOttawa goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) has been the Gee-Gees best player on several occasions this season.
On Friday night Whitlock was undeniably the star of the game not just for the Gee-Gees, but for both teams in their match-up with the UQTR Patriotes.
Despite losing 6-1 the Gee-Gees diminutive goalie was on his game stopping 50 of 56 Patriotes shots.
In the first period, UQTR outshot uOttawa 25-10 but the score was tied 1-1 courtesy of Whitlock’s fine play and a goal by Gee-Gees defence-man Darren Miller.
The second period saw the Patriotes bombard Whitlock with another 20 shots. The Gee-Gees and Whitlock did their best to hold off the top team in the OUA and the No. 3 ranked squad in the CIS but the Patriotes connected for three unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.
UQTR scored 37 seconds into the final frame to go up 5-1 then notched another in the last minute of the game to make the final 6-1.
“There’s no doubt Riley played a great game for us on Friday night,” said Dave Leger, Gee-Gees head coach.
“It was a super effort in what may have been his last game as a Gee-Gee,” Leger continued. “Riley is applying to Law School at uOttawa and is waiting to see if he gets accepted.”
The Gee-Gees play their last game of the year on Saturday night, February 13 when they travel to Montreal to take on the McGill Redmen. Game time is 7:00 pm.
