This week’s uOttawa Athletes of the week came up big on home field to keep their teams undefeated. All three University of Ottawa varsity teams that are currently in the regular season are undefeated and ranked in the national Top Ten lists this week.
For the women’s rugby team, fifth-year Simone Savary came through in the second half with two tries against the Laval Rouge et Or. Savary’s efforts swung the scoreboard from a 10-5 deficit to a 17-10 lead after a convert by team mate Courtney Mastine. Also a key presence on defence at prop, Savary helped the Gee-Gees shut down Laval the rest of the way and claimed a 20-10 win. The Brampton, Ont., product and Health Sciences student was named to the All-Canadian team in 2015 and competed for Canada in November as part of the Maple Leafs 15s national program in a series against England.
On the football field, Bryce Vieira was a difference maker for the Gee-Gees. The third-year running back contributed 90 yards of rushing to the Gee-Gees cause, including a touchdown on 22 carries. But he also led the squad in receptions, catching 18 passes for 207 yards and another touchdown to help lift Ottawa to a 30-8 win over McMaster. Vieira, a Theatre major from Montreal, showed his ability to fight for extra yardage and willingness to take a hit after catches. Ottawa is now ranked no. 8 in the nation thanks to its 2-0 start to the season and hosts the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, September 17.
