After being named the OUA Player of the Year on Wednesday for her outstanding regular season, Karina Kruger Schwanke led the Gee-Gees to the OUA Championship on Saturday night. In the two games at the Final Four, Krueger Schwanke totalled 26 kills, including the championship-winning point, six blocks, two service aces, and twenty digs. The third-year left side hitter was also named the MVP of the Final Four tournament. The Gee-Gees are seeded third in the CIS Championship bracket, and will travel to Sherbrooke on Tuesday to prepare for their opening match of the national championship which is slated for 8 p.m. on Thursday night against the host Vert et Or.
Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue – Men’s basketball – 3rd year – Gatineau, Que. – Science
Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue proved once more that he is a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs as he recorded a career-high 31 points in the Gee-Gees’ 74-70 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Saturday night. The 6-6 post player logged 35 minutes and shot 12-for-15 from the floor and 7-for-11 from the free throw line. Even more impressive was the Gatineau native’s work on defence – he limited the Rams’ premiere post player, Bjorn Michaelson, to just four points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, including four offensive rebounds, helping uOttawa to win the battle on the boards. Gonthier-Dubue led all scorers in the game which sends the Gee-Gees to the OUA Wilson Cup tournament.
