HEADLINE: Ravens win OUA East
Fourth-year post Kevin McCleery led all scorers with 27 points Saturday night in the No. 1 Carleton Ravens 76-69 win over No. 3 Gee-Gees men’s basketball to finish the OUA regular season and repeat as East division champion.
The Ravens (21-1) improved to 2-0 against the cross-town Gee-Gees this season despite missing fifth-year star forward Aaron Doornekamp (foot) to finish four points ahead of second-place uOttawa (19-3).
“They played harder than we did,” said Gee-Gees head coach Dave DeAveiro.
Both teams will host an OUA East semifinal next Saturday.
Fourth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe led the Gee-Gees with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Fourth-year transfer guard Josh Wright hit for 15 points during the game and on himself afterwards.
“Me shooting as bad as I shot,” said Wright, who was five-of-18 from the field over 35 minutes. ‘We came out with a lack of energy and lack of focus and you can’t do that against the No. 1 team.”
Fifth-year guard Stu Turnbull, who had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Ravens, said Carleton won on defence.
“I would say Aaron is the best player in the country, but we still have a pretty good D,” said Turnbull.
McCleery led all players with 17 points in the first two quarters.
The Law student also had eight rebounds as the Ravens widened a two-point lead after the first quarter to seven points (41-34) at the half.
