Huskies edge out Gee-Gees in NCAA exhibition

For the second straight day the University of Ottawa men's basketball team put together a solid first half of play against NCAA competition. On Monday night, the game remained within reach for the Gee-Gees until the final minutes when a late cold streak on offence allowed the Northeastern Huskies to seal a 79-70 victory.

The opening half saw the Huskies shoot 50 per cent from the floor, but the Gee-Gees kept pace by going 7-for-19 from three-point land as the lead exchanged hands. The score was tied 35-35 at the half.

Rookie Moe Ismail sank the first three-pointer of the game for Ottawa and finished the game 4-for-6 from behind the arc en route to a 16 point breakout performance. Mike L'Africain, who hit several key shots for the Gee-Gees down the stretch including a pretty floater in the lane, led all scorers in the game with 20 points.

Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue had a solid game in the paint for uOttawa, collecting ten rebounds and nine points. Ottawa matched Northeastern in rebounding at 30 apiece.

Northeastern was led by post player Zach Stahl who bucketed 19 points to go with nine rebounds, and slashing guards Jonathan Lee and Joel Smith, who each finished the game with 18 points.

The Gee-Gees will next be in action at home against Loyalist College on Saturday, September 22nd before beginning their CIS pre-season schedule at Bishops University the weekend of September 28th for games against Bishops and Laval.
