HEADLINE: Gibson-Bascombe rainbows Gee-Gees to win
Josh Gibson-Bascombe had the winning three-point basket with 24 seconds left Friday night for a 71-68 comeback win over UPEI to open the 2008 Jack Donohue Memorial Tip-Off tournament in high drama.
The fourth-year Gee-Gees guard overcame an elbow to the nose early in the first quarter to finish with 19 points as uOttawa extended its pre-season win streak against CIS competition to six games.
“Coach told us to just keep shooting it,” said Gibson-Bascombe. “And my nose is kind of sore, but it’s ok.”
Fifth-year post player Dax Dessureault had 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Gee-Gees, which allowed a three-point lead at the half to vanish in the third and fourth quarters.
Second-year forward Manock Lual, from Ottawa, was the Panthers top scorer with 13 points and 13 rebounds. UPEI also may have lost third-year forward Anthony McDougald to a knee injury suffered early in the first half.
‘We have had a trying six weeks getting to know each other,” said Panthers second-year head coach Matt Davies. “We’re still not quite there.”
uOttawa, seeking a third straight Donohue tournament victory, hosts Guelph Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
