“It was a game of runs,” as stated by Gee-Gees’ head coach Dave DeAveiro, but the Gee-Gees managed to come out on top and add a seventh win to their record Friday evening as they defeated the York Lions 91-82.
The Gee-Gees and Lions were tied at 20 points apiece at the end of the first quarter. The Gee-Gees managed to outscore York by seven in both the second and third quarter, but the Lions picked things up in the last quarter, outscoring the Gee-Gees by five; however, it would not be enough to take the win.
Fifth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto, Ont.) led the Gee-Gees in scoring with 29 points, followed by second-year guard Warren Ward (London, Ont.) with 20 points , and fifth-year guard Donnie Gibson (Kingston, Ont.) with 18 points.
“They came at us and never quit” said DeAveiro, explaining that both teams had scoring runs throughout the game.
“We didn’t want to lose the lead,” noted Gibson-Bascombe, who scored three consecutive baskets in the last minutes of the fourth quarter to help secure a victory. “You don’t want to lose, so you just have to pick things up.”
The Gee-Gees host the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-7 OUA) tomorrow evening at 8:00 p.m. at the Montpetit Hall.
