Despite being away from the court for over three weeks the Gee-Gees put together a very strong effort in their opening game at the Rod Shoveller tournament on the campus of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

On Friday afternoon, uOttawa kicked off the eight team tournament with a game against the Acadia Axemen from Atlantic University Sport (AUS).

Despite a little bit of rust due to lack of playing and practising time over the holiday break the Gee-Gees overpowered the Axemen 86-61 with an overall team effort.

“Considering it’s our first game back after the break, I’m pretty happy with the result,” said Dave DeAveiro, Gee-Gees head coach. “We were sloppy at times but did a lot of good things defensively and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the contest.”

uOttawa led 39-25 at the half then poured in on offensively with 47 points in the final two quarters.

Gee-Gees guard Warren Ward was named the Player of the Game with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Four uOttawa players picked up 10 points or more in the victory.

The Gee-Gees will now meet the CIS No. 7 ranked St. Francis Xavier X-Men at 6 pm (Atlantic) on Saturday, January 2.

Laurier Golden Hawks, Laurentian Voyageurs, Concordia Stingers and Saint Mary’s Huskies are other universities participating in the tournament.
