In their first event as a varsity club, the Gee-Gees men’s golf team is attending the Canadian University and College Championship in Chilliwack, B.C. from May 29 to June 1.
In the fall, the Gee-Gees captured a silver medal at the OUA Golf Championships, qualifying for their place at the Golf Canada hosted national championships at the Chilliwack Golf Club. The team’s five members that won the silver have bonded as a unit and shown that there is a bright future in the Gee-Gees golf program.
Gabriel Gingras, Michael Reaume, Anthony Brodeur, Nicholas Workun, and Jared Coyle are the five representing the University of Ottawa at the tournament, hoping to continue their successes in the last year.
“This is the deepest team we have put together,” said Gee-Gees coach Paul Carson. “In 26 years I haven’t seen a team come together like this. Despite being an individual sport, they are truly trying to help each other. Not once have they said ‘I did my job’, there is truly no ‘I’ in this team.”
Following the first day of play, the Gee-Gees sit in 9th place of the 20 teams present after shooting nine over par as group. Brodeur had the best first round for the Gee-Gees, shooting a 73 to finish one over par. With plenty of movement still to come, the team will look to continue climbing the leaderboard throughout the week.
To follow the team throughout the tournament, live scoring is available on Golf Canada’s website.
