uOttawa took a strong grip on the game in the early going and maintained a comfortable lead throughout as they defeated the Ryerson Rams 76-64 in Toronto on Saturday. The win is the tenth in a row for the first-place Gee-Gees.

“We made it through that one,” commented head coach Andy Sparks. He continued, “Our execution was a little lax at times and they are an exceptionally hard working team. They scrapped with us and they didn’t quit when they were down twenty.”

Ottawa’s defensive efforts staked them to their lead as they swarmed the Rams in the first quarter with good help defense and man-to-man pressure. The Gee-Gees were actively jumping the passing lanes for steals and collected points in bunches in transition.

Ryerson drew within 11 in the third, but the Gee-Gees answered by finding Jenna Gilbert (Ottawa, Ont.) spotted up in the corner and she was able to hit several long range shots to extend the Gees’ lead back to 19 at the end of the quarter. Gilbert finished with 16 points.

Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) led the way for the Gee-Gees, matching her season high of 18 points. Ring shot 3-3 from long range and was also a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line. Ryerson’s fourth year forward Angela Tilk had her second straight twenty-point game, registering 23 points in the losing effort.

When asked how the two weekend wins will impact the team’s overall confidence, Coach Sparks had this to say; “We keep the same approach every game and try not to focus on what’s down the road, but if we continue to get better we could do something special.”

The Gee-Gees can now truly turn their attention to the midweek showdown with second-place Carleton at the Capital Hoops Classic this Wednesday night at Scotiabank Place. Click here for a video preview of the event and for ticket information please see the Buy Tickets page.
