Women’s Basketball (6-2 OUA, 12-4 CIS)
@ Laurentian (2-6 OUA) on Friday, January 6, 6:00 p.m. (SSN Canada)
@ York (4-4 OUA) on Saturday, January 7, 6:00 p.m. (SSN Canada)
The uOttawa women’s basketball team is on a roll. A string of six consecutive OUA regular season victories propelled the team to the top of the OUA East standings and into the CIS top ten. Next, Ottawa tallied three victories in exhibition action over the December exam break including an 18 point win over CIS eighth-ranked Acadia. Needless to say, the outlook for the second half of the season is bright.
The second half begins for the Gee-Gees on Friday night with a road tilt against the Laurentian Voyageurs. The Voyageurs have struggled to score; they are currently ranked third-last in the CIS in points per game with an average of 44.9 compared to Ottawa’s 68.0. Of note though: Laurentian has a win over McMaster, one of the teams which beat Ottawa at the beginning of the season.
After the game with Laurentian, Ottawa must try to tame the 4-4 York Lions. York features four players who are averaging 10 points per game or higher. Ottawa should also expect to see plenty of long range shots from the Lions – York leads the CIS in both the number of three-pointers taken, and made.
The Gee-Gees won all three games they played against the Lions last season, including a matchup in the OUA East quarterfinals.
Both games this weekend will be available on SSN Canada.
