uOttawa to host CIS Women’s Basketball East Regional Tournament

Thursday December 15, 2011

OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday that the University of Ottawa and University of Saskatchewan have been selected as hosts of the 2012 CIS women’s basketball East and West Regional tournaments, respectively.

The Regional tournaments will take place the weekend of March 9-10, featuring a double-header of semi-final games on Friday night and a single final on Saturday to determine the winner and send a team to the CIS Final 8 tournament. The 2012 Final 8 is set for March 17-19 at the University of Calgary.

“Over the last several years Andy Sparks and his staff have developed a program that competes among the top CIS teams,” said Luc Gélineau, University of Ottawa Director of Sports Services. “uOttawa is proud to showcase our strong women’s basketball program and our great student-athletes by hosting this tournament.”

This win-or-go-home style of tournament provides a unique opportunity for Gee-Gees fans to see non-conference opponents at Montpetit Hall in meaningful games with a national championship berth on the line.  uOttawa will host the OUA and AUS finalists as well as the Canada West bronze medallists, while Saskatchewan will host the Canada West and RSEQ runner-ups and OUA third-place-finishers.

“Hosting regionals is a great opportunity to bring the best in women's basketball to Ottawa. I believe the community will get behind this CIS nationals qualifier and come out to support the Gee-Gees and the three other teams that qualify for these games,” commented uOttawa head coach Andy Sparks.

Tickets will go on sale for the East Regional Tournament on January 20, 2012 and will be available through uOttawa Sports Services and Capital Tickets. Ticket prices are for one day of the tournament.
