For the second straight summer, uOttawa’s Catherine Traer has been invited to compete for a spot on the Junior Women’s National Team. Canada Basketball released the list of twenty invitees on Tuesday afternoon in advance of this week’s two-day tryout.
Traer, who earned OUA All-Rookie honours in her first season with the Gee-Gees and previously played on U17 provincial teams for both Quebec and Ontario, is one of just two athletes on the list of invitees to attend a CIS school last season. Saskatchewan’s Kaylee Halvorson is the other CIS player, while four invitees attended NCAA institutions last year. The remaining athletes are just coming out of high school as the team must be comprised of athletes born on or after Jan. 1, 1994.
The athletes will begin the tryout by invitation workouts on June 26-27 with the hopes of earning an invitation to the training camp which will run until July 7, all at Durham College in Oshawa, Ont. From there, the selected Junior National Team athletes will travel to France and Spain for exhibition games before opened play at the FIBA U19 World Championship tournament July 18, in Panevezys, Lithuania.
