Season wrap-up: Strong finish highlights Gee-Gees season

Thursday April 22, 2010

Season record: 12-10 (OUA)

Playoff record: 3-1 (OUA silver medal; lost to Windsor in OUA final)

2010 CIS championship record: 0-2 (lost to Windsor and Cape Breton)

An extended playoff run was capped off with a thrilling win over Carleton in the OUA East final, and uOttawa qualified for the national championship for the second straight year under head coach Andy Sparks.

In 2009-2010, the women’s basketball team was the only Gee-Gees varsity team to qualify for a CIS tournament.

“This year’s team had seven first-year and seven returning players,” said Sparks. “With so many new additions it took a while for the girls to develop the necessary chemistry to reach its potential. There were many close games through the season that helped to build character.

The close games showed that we have made the steps to play with the best teams in the country. Hopefully in the near future we will be able to come up with wins in these games.”

Among many noteworthy highlights this season, we can’t dismiss the achievements of third year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.), who lead the OUA in scoring with 415 points and finished second in the nation in total rebounds (237). Sunley-Paisley was also named the OUA East player of the year and second team all-Canadian.

Moving on at the end of this season are Kelly Weir, Courtney Berquist, Marie-Eve Caouette and Jade Fair. Melina Wishart and Emilie Morasse may not be returning to pursue other educational opportunities.

The future looks very bright for the Gee-Gees with the eight returning players: Hannah Sunley-Paisley, Charlotte MacKenzie (Ottawa, Ont.), Awo Farah (Ottawa, Ont.), Rose-Anne Joly (Gatineau, Que.), Kizzy Clarke (Brossard, Que.), Katye Chase (Cornwall, Ont.), Alex Naylor (Calgary, Alb.) and Catherine Cloutier (St. Hubert, Que.).

The recruiting class will be led by LaSalle University transfer Jenna Gilbert who practiced with the team during the second term.

Two other first year players have signed on, and a pair of excellent additions is to be finalized in the next couple of weeks.
