The Gee-Gees women’s basketball team came together to overcome an early deficit and then held off a late charge from the Windsor Lancers to win game two at the Tournoi Rouge et Or des Fêtes on Tuesday afternoon at Laval. The 63-61 win came on the back of strong team defence for an Ottawa team which is now 12-3 against CIS
competition this season.

Catherine Traer led Ottawa with 14 points including 2-3 shooting from long distance. Krista van Slingerland netted 13 points while Kellie Forand provided 12 off the bench. The Lancers received scoring from all over the floor with Emily Prevost with the team high of 12.

Compared to the November regular season meeting between the teams at Montpetit Hall in Ottawa, when the Gee-Gees established an early lead and never looked back, this game was remarkably streaky. The Gee-Gees ruled the middle portion of the game, outscoring the Lancers 39-20 through the second and third quarters after trailing 17-11 at the end of the first.
Ottawa (35 per cent) was outpaced in shooting percentage by the Lancers (44 per cent) but took excellent care of the basketball, committing just 16 turnovers compared to 32 from the Lancers side.
The Lancers, down 50-37 after three quarters, mounted a furious comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. Ottawa began the fourth strong but then committed a string of fouls which allowed Windsor to start creeping back. Despite some late foul shooting difficulty by Ottawa the lead was never quite erased.

The Gee-Gees will wrap up the exhibition tournament with a game against the no. 5 ranked McMaster Marauders on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.
