The women’s basketball team dusted off the summer cobwebs and premiered some new talent in an exhibition match against the Iona College Gaels Thursday night at Montpetit Hall. The Gaels used an offensive explosion of 28 points in the second quarter to ultimately overcome the Gee-Gees by a 70-56 score.
The other three quarters were evenly matched and Kellie Ring sparked a comeback run in the third quarter which cut the 43-31 half time deficit to three points. However, Iona’s star player Damika Martinez turned it on late to pad the Gaels’ lead. Martinez, the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year, dropped 26 points in the game to lead all scorers.
Three new players hit the court for the Gee-Gees and all three made it onto the score sheet. Julia Soriano made her debut at the guard spot, showing her quickness and defensive tenacity, and sunk a three pointer in the game’s final seconds. Catherine Traer brought a composed presence on offence and defence, rebounded well and chipped in with a couple of baskets. Katherine Lemoine battled in the paint and used her strong post moves to lead the rookies in scoring with seven points.
