The Gee-Gees women’s basketball team has had an active preseason and it continues this weekend at Laval for the Tournoi Rouge et Or. Ottawa enters the tournament with a 4-2 record against CIS competition, including tight wins over Trinity Western and Victoria. This weekend Ottawa will face Top Ten teams from 2015-16, a year which saw the Gee-Gees post a 17-2 regular season, capture the OUA silver medal, and advance to the CIS national championship tournament.

Gee-Gees schedule at Laval:

Sunday – 12 p.m. vs. Laval – YouTube link

Ottawa was ranked as high as no. 6 in the national Top Ten last season, as were the Laval Rouge et Or. On the east coast, St. Mary’s was ranked consistently at the no. 3 position throughout last season and claimed the CIS bronze medal. This weekend will be a big measuring stick for the new-look Gee-Gees, who have thus far posted 58.2 points per game while allowing 54.6.

With five seniors in the lineup, Ottawa has shown the ability to edge out opponents in close games and play persistent defence. Fifth-year point guard Julia Soriano was named to the tournament All-Star team at Concordia two weeks ago. Fourth-year forward Sarah Besselink dropped 20 points on UPEI at that tournament, shooting 4-for-7 from long distance.
