HEADLINE: Bring on the playoffs!
Fourth-year guard Kyrie Love scored 10 points in her final regular season game as Gee-Gees women’s basketball defeated Queen’s 70-59 Saturday night in the final regular season game to secure second-place in the OUA East and a home playoff berth for the first time in four seasons.
“I have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” sad Love, whispering through a fat lip from an errant elbow in the third quarter.
“It’s a first for me in my career.”
uOttawa finishes with a 15-7 record, a dramatic turn-around from 3-19 last season.
The Gee-Gees will host an OUA quarter-final playoff game at Montpetit Hall Saturday, February 21 (3:00 p.m.).
“Now we’re really into the important season,” said first-year uOttawa head coach Andy Sparks. “The reality is the big games start next week.”
Second-year guard Emilie Morasse and fifth-year post Katie Laurie each scored 11 points for the Gee-Gees.
Love, who along with Laurie was one of three seniors honoured before the game, struck for a three-point basket to open the game and eight points in the first half for a narrow 38-37 uOttawa advantage at the half.
The Gee-Gees last hosted a playoff game February 19, 2005 (W, 59-48 over York) en route to a return berth to the OUA final.
