Fitness 101 at uOttawa

We’re working our way to another academic year and now, I want to teach you how to easily avoid the Freshman 15 by taking advantage of one or more of the activities that are offered by Sports Services. You might already know about the fitness centres (at Montpetit and the Minto Sports Complex) and you might go workout a few times at the beginning of the year, or you might even go all semester long if you’re determined and motivated. Going to the gym however is not the only thing that is offered to the university community, because let’s be honest, sometimes it’s hard to get up and go early in the morning, or you get too busy with schoolwork. Want to see what is offered, read on (especially if just working out at the gym is not for you).

If you always wanted to play a sport, revive a high school career or try something brand new, the intramurals program is for you! It is top notch and world class (what a lot of students say), there hundreds (or maybe even a few thousand) that register every year. You can choose between soccer, hockey, flag football, dodgeball, basketball, ultimate and volleyball. Sign up with a group or on your own, you’ll be sure to make new friends. Gee-Gees intramurals offers the perfect balance between competitiveness and fun, in an experience you won’t forget.

If organized sports aren’t your thing, there are a number of other activities you can choose from. If you’ve ever watched an action movie, seen a fight scene and thought to yourself “I wish I could do that”? Perhaps the Martial Arts are for you. Sadly, there is no ‘Jackie Chan fighting style 101’ but with Campus Rec you can learn a myriad of different forms and styles (Karate, Aikido, and Taekwondo, to name a few) through the classes offered.

Maybe dance is for you? You can impress a special someone with new moves and at the same time you’ll get a great cardio workout, without using a treadmill or running outside. The dance classes will get your heart rate up and you’ll be sweating away those freshmen 15 and building up endurance in no time.

Did your parents used to call you a fish when you were younger when you never wanted to get out of the pool? Or have you recently read up on the benefits of aquatic activities? Whatever the case, you might like to know the university has an amazing aquatic facility and with an Olympic size pool, two diving boards, swimming lessons, aqua zumba classes, liquid lunch classes and open swim, you can reap the benefits year round!

Another amazing program offered by sports services (wait, there’s more?!), if you’re serious and want a personalized training routine you can enlist the services of one of our personal trainers, many of which are former (or current) uOttawa students. They know how it is to be a student and they will work hand in hand with you to get you in the best shape you’ve ever been in. Whether strengthening, cardio, or endurance, the PT’s will help you find what you enjoy best and what will get you results. It’s great doing routines that are ‘made for everyone’ but when it comes to fitness, one size does not fit all, try something new and exciting with Gee-Gees personal trainers.

One other thing you may not realize is that throughout the academic year Sport Services offers you a wide range of Outdoor Activities. Have you ever wanted to go winter camping? Dogsledding? Whale Watching? Rafting? Cave exploring? These are just a few of the activities offered. If you’re one of those people who much rather getting out and do ‘things’, maybe a little more out of the ordinary, instead of a set routine, the Outdoor Activities are for you! If you’re looking for a one of a kind adventure look into these activities ASAP because they fill up SUPER fast.

They have everything, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SnapChat and of course an amazing website, offering you all sorts of fitness tips, tricks and letting you know of all the services it and the university provides to help us stay healthy and active during our time at uOttawa.

Sport Services is an integral part of the student experience here at the University of Ottawa. Campus Recreation is made for the university community (students and staff), they want to ensure you’re able to benefit as much as you can from a unique fitness experience.
