The referees apply the Hockey Canada rules. However, Sports Services has introduced a number of special rules to better comply with the philosophy and objectives of its intramural programs:
-
Equipment:
-
All players must wear a C.S.A approved helmet with full facial protection.
-
A piece of identification, as well as an intramural t-shirt, is required at each game to gain access to the playing surface.
-
At the mandatory captain’s meeting, the Intramural Program will distribute a maximum of 15 t-shirts of the same dominant color to team captains which are to be worn during every game. The captain is responsible for distributing the t-shirts to their teammates.
-
Sticks and other protective equipment are the responsibility of the individual participants. No wooden blades are permitted on sticks and no tape is permitted on the blade of any player’s stick.
-
Goaltenders are not permitted to wear ice hockey goalie pads. Other goalie equipment such as chest protectors/ arm pads and trappers are permitted. Goaltenders must wear a C.S.A approved helmet with full facial protection.
-
Scoring / Tie Breaking Procedures:
-
No game shall end in a tie. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, a shootout will occur with 3 players from each team. Players of opposite teams will shoot simultaneously at both ends of the playing surface. The team with the most goals after 3 shooters shall be declared the winner. If the game is still tied, a "sudden death" shootout with one player from each team will continue until a winner is declared. Players cannot shoot twice, unless all eligible players have participated. Players who are penalized at the end of the regular time cannot participate in any shootout. At least one female must participate in the shootout for each team. If a shootout advances to sudden-death rounds, a female player must take at least every second attempt with no female shooting again until all other female players have had at least one attempt.
-
Standings are decided according to the team's winning percentage (matches won / matches played).
-
If there is a tie in the standings at the end of the regular season, the team with the greatest goal differential (goals for - goals against) will finish first.
-
If a tie remains after looking at goal point differential, the team who won the head-to-head game between the teams involved will be declared the winner.
-
In the case of a three-way tie, the team with the greatest goal differential between only the three teams involved will be declared the winner. The winner of the head-to-head results between the two remaining teams will finish second.
-
Game Format:
-
Hockey games are divided into two 22-minute running-time halves, preceded by a three-minute warm-up. There will only be faceoffs at the beginning of the periods. After goals, the team that gets scored on gets possession behind their net.
-
The clock will only stop for major injuries or for major equipment problems.
-
If at any time during the last minute of play (in the second half) the goal differential is 1 or less, the half will finish with stopped time. Once stopped time begins, it will stay this way until the end of the game.
-
Rules Governing Play:
Note: Any player who physically abuses an official before, during or after a game will be suspended for an indefinite period pending a review of their actions. Consequences may even result in a permanent suspension and/or sanctions from the University.
-
Each team must have 1 goalie and 4 players on the playing surface to start and continue the game.
-
Player changes must take place during play, after a goal, when a penalty is called.
-
All leagues are non-contact, body checking is not permitted.
-
Yellow cards will be assessed for all minor penalties. There is no disadvantage for the offending team on a yellow card; however, the opposing team will be awarded a penalty shot to be taken immediately by the affected player.
-
Red cards will be assessed for all major penalties and include an automatic game misconduct penalty. The offending player’s team will play the remainder of the game with one less player on the court. If a team’s only female player is assessed a red card and the team has no other eligible female players available, the game will be considered a forfeit. If, because of a red card, a team has fewer than three eligible players available, the game will also be considered a forfeit. All red cards are subject to review by the Disciplinary Committee and further discipline may be imposed.
-
A player receiving two yellow cards or one red card will be ejected from the game.
-
Unsportsmanlike conduct or abuse of official penalties will include an automatic game ejection or, at the discretion of the official, a game misconduct penalty. In both of the above cases, the Disciplinary Committee will review the actions and may impose sanctions based on the reports received.
-
Players who are assessed fighting majors or match penalties receive an automatic red card, a game misconduct, and are expelled from the league for the remainder of the season, as a minimum.
-
Players are allowed to use 3 of the 4 walls on the playing surface. If the ball goes out of bounds on the 4th wall side, it will result in an inbound for the opposing team which cannot be directed directly at the opposing net. Defending players must not be within 8 feet of the ball during an inbound.
-
Defaults:
-
Teams losing by default incur a $20 performance-bond penalty which is to be paid at Montpetit 102 or the Sports Complex Client Services Desk before the next scheduled game. If a team fails to follow this, that team will be suspended until further notice and will incur further performance bond penalties for each subsequent game defaulted. For more information please see the Performance Bond section in the Intramural Guide.
-
A default takes place if, after a three-minute warm-up and a seven-minute grace period, one of the two teams has fewer than five eligible players on the court, including the goalie and at least one female player. Any team with no female players will not be considered eligible to play. There are no exceptions.
-
If the defaulting team’s captain has given due notice (three working days before the game) to the Coordinator, the team having won by default may use the time for practice or a friendly game.
-
In the event of a default, the recorded score will be 3-0 in favor of the team with the appropriate number of players.
