Athletic Financial Awards

As the leader in the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) and amongst the Top 8 highest providers of Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) in Canada, the University of Ottawa is proud to be able to offer over a quarter million dollars to our varsity student-athletes. University of Ottawa varsity student-athletes can be provided with a maximum of $3500 in Athletic Financial Aid; below is a summary of AFAs available.

Entrance Athletic Financial Awards

 

UNDERGRADUATE ENTERING AWARD :

Application: Nomination by head coach (June1) – limited number provided per team

  Criteria:
  1. Be registered full-time and meet all CIS/OUA/QSSF criteria
  2. 80% admissions average
    (NOTE: this is different than the average used by the university to determine academic entrance scholarships).
  Award:

Maximum $3,500 (OUA), $5,000 (QSSF) – amounts can be provided as full or half awards.


  GRADUATE ENTERING AWARD:

Application: Nomination by head coach (June 1) – limited number provided per team

  Criteria:
  1. Be admitted full-time into a graduate degree program and meet all CIS/OUA/QSSF criteria
  2. Used a minimum of two years of eligibility
  3. Be an active member of a varsity program 4. 80% admissions average
  4. 80% admissions average
    (NOTE: this is different than the average used by the university to determine academic entrance scholarships)
  Award:

Maximum $3,500 (OUA), $5,000 (QSSF) – amounts can be provided as full or half awards.


Returning Student-Athlete Financial Awards

 

OSOTF BURSARIES / VARIOUS UOTTAWA BURSARIES :

Application: Online InfoWeb application  (February 28) – limited number provided

  Criteria:
  1. Be registered full-time and meet all CIS/OUA/QSSF criteria
  2. 6.0 / 70% average based on previous year’s AGPA
  3. Ontario resident
  4. A returning, active member of a varsity team
  5. Pre-application for provincial government financial aid (OSOTF only)
  Award:

Maximum $3,500


  MERIT AWARDS:

Application: Nomination by head coach (June 1) – limited number provided per team

  Criteria:
  1. Be registered full-time and meet all CIS/OUA/QSSF criteria
  2. 6.0 / 70% average based on previous year’s AGPA
  3. A returning, active member of a varsity team
  4. Meet the sport specific merit award criteria
  Award:

$1000


  STUDENT-ATHLETE FINANCIAL AID:

Application: Application form (June 1) – limited number provided

  Criteria:
  1. Be registered full-time and meet all CIS/OUA/QSSF criteria
  2. 6.0 / 70% average based on previous year’s AGPA
  3. A returning, active member the football, soccer, basketball, volleyball or hockey team.
  4. Pre-application for provincial government financial aid
  Award:

Maximum $3,000


Student-Athlete Support

The University of Ottawa Sports Services value the importance of supporting a student-athlete in all areas of their development. Below are some of the support services provided to all varsity student-athletes.

Academic Services: Academic counseling and guidance provided by student mentors assigned to each varsity team; access to tutoring services for student-athletes in need; various team-run academic support programs.

Admissions Support: Prior to being admitted, an Admissions Liaison within Sport Services can help you prepare and submit your application, provide guidance and advice on program availability and support with any admissions inquiries.

Student-Athlete Eligibility
University of Ottawa student-athletes are required to be registered full-time (12 credits or as designated by your Faculty) while they are competing. If you have questions about, or are considering changing your academic status, you must contact the head coach of the program, the Student-Athlete Services Officer, or the Assistant Athletic Director, Programs&Services BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.

Doping Policies, Resources, Education
All Canadian Interuniversity Sport student-athletes are part of CCES’ (Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport) testing pool and have a chance of being tested for use of prohibited substances.

Athletic Therapy
Each varsity team is provided with student therapists who are trained to provide immediate assistance and care. A head athletic therapist, a physiotherapist and team of doctors complete the varsity Athletic Therapy team. Their services are provided to all varsity student-athletes free of charge.
