The Gee-Gees and the Gaels women’s volleyball teams were involved in one of the most exciting matches so far of this OUA season, on January 27. Unfortunately for uOttawa fans, the Gee-Gees ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 loss at Kingston, dropping their record to 10-5. For now, Queen’s is the new second-place team in the OUA with an 11-5 record, just a hair above uOttawa in the standings. The Gee-Gees had won three straight games in sweeps, prior to this match.
The Garnet and Grey started the match well, winning their 10th straight set in convincing fashion, 25-15. The Gaels, a former OUA East divisional rival of the Gee-Gees, bounced back in the second frame, tying the match at one set apiece. Third-year LS/RS Laura Carmanico (Stittsville, Ont.) led all Gee-Gees with 12 kills in the match.
After losing their first set in two weeks, the Gee-Gees were able to regroup, as they led 19-12 at the Gaels’ second timeout of the third set. uOttawa closed out the frame without much difficulty, winning 25-18. However, the roller-coaster of a match took a bad turn for the Gee-Gees in the fourth set, with uOttawa losing 25-12. Queen’s was able to go on a run late in the set, and Ottawa simply did not have an answer in front of a hostile crowd.
Though Queen’s took an early 7-4 lead in the tiebreaking set, third-year setter Christina Grail (London, Ont.) had two crafty point-scoring tips to help the Gee-Gees make a comeback attempt. Second-year M/LS Kayla Bell-Hammond (North Gower, Ont.) also had two kills late in the fifth and final set. Bell-Hammond almost had a crucial third kill, but her extremely close kill attempt was ruled out, with Queen’s leading 13-11. Ottawa was unable to recover and lost 15-12.
The Gee-Gees will look to rebound in a home game against the Ryerson Rams on Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. as they continue their journey towards the OUA post-season. Tickets to women’s volleyball games are FREE for uOttawa students.
