Lionel Woods, head coach

Lionel Woods, uOttawa's longest-serving coach, has been with the Gee-Gees since 1988, when he joined women's volleyball as an assistant coach and student athletic therapist. After becoming head coach in 1992, Woods has since led the Gee-Gees to one gold and two silver OUA medals as well as seven OUA Final Four appearances, the last in 2011 (bronze).

In 2010-2011, Woods led the Gee-Gees to a 13-6 record, good enough for second place in the OUA East. After qualifying for the OUA Final Four tournament with a playoff win against Queens, the Gee-Gees, under the guidance of Woods, claimed uOttawa’s first OUA volleyball medal in three years as the team defeated OUA East rival York for the bronze medal.  Read more >

In 2007-08, Woods led the Gee-Gees to a 15-4 record and second-place finish in the OUA East before claiming the OUA bronze medal. In 2006-07, Woods guided his Gee-Gees to a 13-6 regular season record en route to being named the OUA East division coach of year for the second time. The Gee-Gees posted a perfect 3-0 record in the playoffs en route to capturing uOttawa’s first OUA championship in 21 years.

Woods has served as head coach of the Ontario provincial women’s volleyball team. In 1993, where the team captured a silver medal at the National Challenge Cup, and from 1994-1997, as they prepared for the 1997 Canada Summer Games, raking up two national silver medals and two 4th place finishes in the process. Woods also coached J.S. Woodsworth Secondary School to a provincial gold medal in girls’ soccer, and was Manager of Soccer Operations for Ottawa’sThe Intrepid in 1989-1990.

Born in Northampton, England, Woods has been named OUA coach of the year three times in 2002-03, 2006-07, and 2010-2011. For over 24 years, Woods has coached volleyball, basketball, hockey, tennis, and soccer and has achieved a level III coaching certification in volleyball. As of the 2007-08 season, Woods had a conference record of 163 wins and 97 losses. He has consistent rankings in the top 4 in Ontario and top 15 in Canada as well.

After having lived in Chatham, Ont., Northampton, England, and Moscow – from 1971 to 1973 and during the 1972 Canada Cup – Lionel Woods currently resides in Ottawa with his wife, his son (Keenan, born July 2004), and daughter (Reegan, born April 2006).

Woods holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Kinetics and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa and is currently a Masters candidate in Human Kinetics. 

 

Ling Lee, head assistant coach (middle players, setting, and offense) 

Ling Lee was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With more than 23 years of coaching experience, including soccer and ultimate Frisbee, Lee has been with the uOttawa volleyball program for 14 years, specializing in setting, offense, libero training, and scouting.

As a coach, Lee won a bronze medal with Eastern Ontario's men's volleyball team and from 1994-1997, coached the Kangaroos volleyball club (juvenile, junior women). Lee was also assistant coach for the 1996 men’s provincial B team and for John Abbott College Men’s AAA team. Read more >

Lee has helped lead the Gee-Gees to an OUA championship, John Rennie High School to a national silver medal, and John Abbott College to six provincial medals.

Lee, who played soccer for his hometown of Pointe-Claire from 1978 to 1988,  was also a student-athlete during his high school years at John Rennie, playing volleyball from 1981 to 1986, and soccer from 1984 to 1986. Later, he was a captain of John Abbott College’s volleyball program (1986-1988) and even played five years of beach volleyball.

In Ultimate Frisbee, Lee won three national titles in 1998, 2002, and 2003  and represented Canada at two world championships, claiming a bronze in2000 in Heilbrunn, Germany, and a silver in 2004 in Turku, Finland.

He also received the Leadership Award and the Sarah P. Edey Memorial Award.

Lee says that coaching volleyball at uOttawa provides an opportunity to work with a top tier program as well as elite athletes at the CIS level. Being a true sportsman, he enjoys the feeling of belonging to a team.

“Even when you didn’t want to go to practice, the team time before and after practice made everything else worth it,” said Lee.

Lee graduated from Concordia in 1992 with a major in Economics and a minor in Business studies and also holds a DEC from John Abbott College in Commerce. In addition to this, Lee has  his level II coaching certification in volleyball.

When not helping coach the Gee-Gees, Lee currently works as Chief of Regulatory and Growth Policy at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. 

 

Lenny Sabourin, assistant coach (strength, power and speed coach, and liberos)

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Lenny Sabourin currently works as Manager of Fitness and Instructional Programs for uOttawa’s Sports Services in addition to his coaching duties.

With more than five years of experience with the Gee-Gees volleyball program, including three years as part of the coaching staff, Sabourin is a certified kinesiologist and certified personal trainer, enabling him to bring many different skills to the team. Read more >

Aside from volleyball, Sabourin has also coached Greco-Roman wrestling. From 1991 to 1994 he coached the Gladiator Wrestling Club in Elliot Lake, Ont..

As a player, Sabourin was team captain of a men’s volleyball team from 1996-1997 in Elliot Lake and practiced competitive Greco-Roman wrestling at provincial and national levels from 1989 to 1994.

Sabourin’s sports interests include volleyball, tennis, squash, snowboarding, and weight training. He also plays drums and guitar.

Sabourin holds an Honours Bachelor of Science  in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa. 

Bill Swyers, head recruiter

Born in Labrador City, Nfld., Bill Swyers has lived in cities such as Mississauga, Ont.,  Ancaster, Ont., and Ottawa.

With over 22 years of coaching and training experience, including 16 years with the uOttawa Gee-Gees, Swyers is fully certified in level II volleyball and level III in theory and technical.

Swyers has extensive coaching experience. From 1986-1987, Swyers coached regional volleyball in Labrador City , served as head coach for Madawaska from 1991 to 1993, as well as section head for Madawaska from 1994 to 2008, was head coach for Nepean High School from 1991 to 1998, garnering an OFSAA bronze medal in 1995 and four city championships. Swyers coaching experiences also includes stints as head coach of the Ottawa Kangaroos Junior and Juvenile Women’s teams in 1998, head coach of the Waterdown Radiers’ bantam, midget, juvenile, and junior teams from 1999 to 2002, and head coach of the Ottawa Mavericks Women high performance program from 2004 to 2007, which is created.

Swyers’s scorecard as a player is equally impressive. From 1986-1987, Swyers was a member of the Newfoundland provincial Team, a player on uOttawa’s men's club team from 1989 to 1992, and a member of of his high school’s soccer, volleyball, and basketball teams at Menihek High School from  1985 to 1989. Swyers was also a member on Newfoundland’s provincial alpine ski team from 1983 to 1985, and active in men’s division soccer from 1987 to 1992.

During this time, Swyers was named 1985 Newfoundland Juvenile of the Year in alpine skiing, Menihek High School’s 1989 athlete of the year, and most valuable player of the 1989 AAA provincial championships.

Swyers was a student of the University of Ottawa from 1989 to 1992, after which he became assistant coach from 1992 to 1996 and recruiting coach from 1999 to 2008.
