@ McGill Team Invitational, hosted by McGill University, January 27 to 28
On January 27, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees proved why they belong in the upper echelon of the CIS when it comes to the sport of track and field. Competing at the McGill Team Invitational in Montreal, Ottawa currently sits in third place overall with 37 points, just behind the rival Western Mustangs. The McGill Team Invitational is the biggest CIS competition of the season so far, attracting 15 schools from all over the country--including at least one team from each of the four CIS conferences.
In the field events, third-year Mark Farnsworth (Brockville, Ont.) continued his stellar showing in the men's pole vault, finishing in second place with a successful 4.31m attempt. He also managed to break the uOttawa school record by six centimetres. Second-year sprinter Moussa Sissoko (Paris, France) matched his season-best time in the 60m sprint, as he also finished in second place. Sissoko was edged out from a gold medal finish by just 0.02 seconds. Sissoko also led the men's 4x200m relay team to an impressive first place showing. The Gee-Gees finished the relay race in just 1:26.80, more than a full second ahead of the second-place Western team.
On the women's side, fifth-year Jennifer Perrault (Burlington, Ont.) finished in second place and qualified for the CIS championships in the 1000m event with a time of 2:49.50. Perrault had already qualified for the nationals in the 600m event, earlier this season. Her teammate Julia Tousaw (Goderich, Ont.) finished just behind Perrault in third place. The women's 4x200m relay team also had a nice result, finishing in fourth place, in a highly competitive field.
The McGill Team Invitational will resume at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow. Full results from the competition are available here:
