Gee-Gees Invading Ravens’ Nest
Thursday, February 02 2012

Women’s Basketball (15-2 OUA)

At Carleton (12-5 OUA) on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

The Gee-Gees will be invading the Ravens’ nest this Saturday as they face the Carleton Ravens for their second match-up of the season.  The Ravens will have a chip on their shoulder after their 59-55 Capital Hoops loss to the Gee-Gees, and will have a strong home-court advantage coming into this weekend’s game.

“We’ll look for the counters,” said head coach Andy Sparks on this second meeting, “How we were played by Carleton and what we should do that may be more effective both offensively and defensively. But it’s another league game, so we’ll try to take care of things we need to work on in general.”

The OUA East first place Gee-Gees have climbed to fifth in this week’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport national rankings, though OUA East second place Ravens are close on their heels in sixth.

“We’re not playing as well as we need to be playing. Carleton has a strong team and we need to play strong teams,” commented Sparks on the need for his team, currently on a fifteen game winning streak, to be challenged.

Fifth-year forward Bess Lennox (Ottawa, Ont.) is poised to break the OUA record for most rebounds in a career, only five rebounds shy of setting a new record – a number she is sure to pass at this Saturday’s game with her present 10.24 rebounds per game average.

“That’s a record that probably everyone would aspire to,” said a proud head coach Andy Sparks on Lennox’s nearing record, “It’s an incredible career to get to that many rebounds.”

Other high rankers in the OUA statistics are fifth-year centre Hannah Sunley-Paisley (Toronto, Ont.) who sits second in scoring with 17.71 points per game and second in field goal percentage at 52% and first-year point guard Kellie Ring (Ottawa, Ont.) who is third in assists with 4.47 per game, fourth in three-point percentage at 42%, and fifth in steals with 2.82 per game.
