The Gee-Gees took advantage of power play opportunities to propel themselves to a key 4-3 road victory over the Concordia Stingers on Sunday afternoon. The win puts some distance between the fourth place Gee-Gees and the fifth placed Stingers, while drawing the garnet and grey within one point of the third place Carleton Ravens.
Leading 3-2, Ottawa had a 5-on-3 chance to put the game away and Valerie Watson (St-Hyacinthe, Qué.) came in off the blue line, picked up the rebound of her own blocked shot, and wristed home the game winner.
Coach Yanick Evola was pleased with the effort from his team, especially in the deciding final period, “We deserved that game, we got the puck behind them and fore checked hard – we out worked them in the third.”
Ottawa had most of the early chances as they pinned the puck in the Stingers zone and were able to break out of the neutral zone with speed. Ottawa’s early energy paid off at 17:28 when Fannie Desforges (Fournier, Ont.) chased down the puck on the endboards and centred the puck to Dominique Lefevbre (Cantley, Qué.) right in front of the crease where the Gee-Gees’ top goal scorer quickly directed the puck into the net.
Ottawa’s penalty killing unit was also looking very effective, until a break down the wing by Concordia’s Emilie Bocchia resulted in Concordia’s first goal. The Stingers then took the lead at the beginning of the second period when they benefitted from a strange bounce off the end boards when net minder Tia Marley (Kingston, N.S.) tried a clearing attempt. Bocchia scored each of the Stinger goals, registering a hat trick in the losing cause.
The Stingers had a much stronger second, containing the Gee-Gees’ attack until a series of late penalties gave Ottawa the advantage. Alicia Blomberg (Timmins, Ont.) made a good effort bringing the puck down low to give Carling Chown (Creston, B.C.) the opportunity to make a perfect pass to Desforges, who scored the tying goal on the power play.
The third period was a flurry of action as the teams battled desperately for the two points in the standings. Ottawa took the lead once again with a goal by Janie Paquette (Longueuil, Qué.) and played a clean period which allowed them to hold the pressure on the Stingers. “We were disciplined tonight, and that’s something that has improved all season for us,” said Evola following the game, noting the significance in this game.
