The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team won its opening match of 2017-18 exhibition play, defeating the Lakehead Thunderwolves in two sets of play this afternoon at the Gee-Gees Annual Pre-Season Classic - presented by Holiday Inn Ottawa East and VSP Sports. Ottawa went on to drop a tight three-set match (19-25, 27-25, 19-25) with the defending OUA Champion McMaster Marauders to finish Day One with a 1-1 record.
Ottawa will finish out pool play on Saturday with matches against Dalhousie (2-0) and Sherbrooke (0-2). In the second pool, Montreal has the unbeaten record after wins over Memorial and McGill. Full tournament scores and schedule are available on the event web page.
For the Gee-Gees, rookies Magalie Frappier from Plantagenet, Ont., and Tristan Peterson, of Caledon, Ont., were featured prominently in both matches alongside the veteran starting lineup of Mesret Tamrat, Caroline Lemay, Kara Hayes, and Sabrina Roy. Starting setter Emily Lenton showed her chemistry with Tamrat in the middle as they combined for multiple attacking looks. First-year players Mia Dragicevic of Kitchener, Ont., and Toronto product Renée Fung started the exhibition third set against Lakehead.
“We played our game, and we gained a lot of confidence in the fact that if we play our system we can match up with the top five in the country,” said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods of his team’s performance against McMaster. "We are committed to the first contact in all situations. We realized that in Quebec that is necessary because of the long rallies, and we’ve spent two months working on it. We’ve had a lot of changes to the lineup and I think we’re match ready. We’re leaving happy from today.”
