The Gee-Gees women’s rugby team wasn’t phased when the no. 1 ranked StFX X-Women roared back to tie the score at 14-14 early in the second half. Instead, the Garnet and Grey went on a 19-0 run to impressively capture a meaningful 33-19 exhibition victory in a rematch of the 2016 U SPORTS national final.
Five different players scored a try for no. 6 ranked Ottawa with Emma Sandström going four-for-five on converts. The Gee-Gees speed was a key factor, both in generating offence and averting would-be StFX scores.
“It was about showing what we have – our players are always growing and always building moving forward,” said senior eight Danarae Sommerville. “We want to win nationals and this is a step to do it, to show that we can do it [because of our growth].”
“We’ve matured a lot as a team. This year we encouraged each other to stick to our game plan,” continued Sommerville, comparing Ottawa’s play in the last two games against StFX. “There’s no words for players to understand how the success comes with that, you need to show it.”
Ottawa has two regular season games remaining and sit second in RSEQ standings with a 4-1 regular season record. The Gee-Gees take on Sherbrooke (2-3) on Monday afternoon at Matt Anthony Field.
“Every game we want to show what we’re going to bring to nationals. It’s about building, it’s not about settling,” concluded Sommerville. “We want to keep pushing.”
