The Gee-Gees women’s rugby team hosts an RSEQ semifinal on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and a win will send the team to the U SPORTS National Championship for the fourth straight season.
Tickets are available at tickets.geegees.ca and Gee-Gees Pass holders will be admitted free of charge.
Ottawa is ranked no. 3 in the U SPORTS Top Ten and will face the unranked Montreal Carabins in the semifinal for the third straight season after Montreal finished with a 4-3 record in the regular season to finish in a three-way tie for third place.
When the tie-breakers were applied, Concordia finished third and Montreal fourth with Carleton on the outside of the playoff picture despite defeating the Carabins in head-to-head play. It was Montreal’s surprise 36-34 win late in the season over Concordia which secured them the postseason position.
Ottawa’s remarkable 12 RSEQ all-star and award winners will be recognized before the game, as will the four Carabins all-stars.
In the team’s last meeting at Montreal on September 16, Ottawa led 15-5 at halftime before finishing strong with the final two tries of the match. Breanna Phillipps, Emily Gray, Paulina Karwowski, and Bianca Paiement scored for the Gee-Gees, reflecting a pack-dominated match.
An X-factor in Saturday’s game could be RSEQ Rookie of the Year Lauren Minns. Minns started every game for Ottawa this season except for the game against the Carabins.
The Gee-Gees have never lost to Montreal since the Carabins joined the league in 2012.
