Four Gee-Gees teams were back to work on the weekend, competing in regular season games to kick off 2017. The first Athletes of the Week of the new year come from the hockey rink, as the women’s team earned a big Sunday win over McGill while the men moved above .500 to 8-7-4 with a win at RMC.
Émilie Bouchard sparkled for Ottawa in Sunday’s 3-1 victory. The Casselman, Ont. product stopped 36 Martlet shots and was under near-constant pressure. The win was the third of the season for Bouchard, who now sports a 3-0 record with a 2.33 goals against average and .924 save percentage. The senior tender, who previously played at Moncton, is a Physiotherapy Master’s student. The win puts Ottawa back in second place in the RSEQ standings, just three points behind McGill.
Kevin Domingue is the Athlete of the Week for the second time this season following his four-point performance against the Paladins Saturday night. The team’s offensive leader, Domingue potted two goals and added two helpers to the 8-1 win. Originally from Laval, Que., Domingue now has 20 points on the season; his 11 goals ties him for seventh overall in the OUA and puts him second in the league among rookies. Ottawa plays host to three games in men’s hockey this weekend, taking on Lakehead on Friday and Saturday nights and also hosting Laurentian on Sunday at 2 p.m.
