Despite losing an early two goal lead, the uOttawa Gee-Gees would charge back against the Queen’s Gaels Friday night, only to lose in a shootout in their OUA season opener, 7-6.

Things looked good early on for the Gee-Gees as second year forward Paul Forster, Perth, Ont., scored two minutes into the game. Less than four minutes later, third-year forward Simren Sandhu, Calgary, Alta., would net another goal for the Gee-Gees on a 3-on-2 power-play rush, putting uOttawa up 2-0.

However Queen’s would take over from that point on, scoring four unanswered goals to close out the first period.

“I was impressed with their team, they really battled,” said Gee-Gees head coach Dave Leger, “when we weren’t at our best they made us pay.”

The Gee-Gees would charge back in the third, scoring three unanswered goals.  First-year forward Kyle Ireland, Rosetown, Sask., would start things off for the Gee-Gees, scoring his second power-play goal of the night midway through the period, keeping the Gee-Gees within two.

First-year defenseman Dominic Jalbert, Gatineau, Que, would put the Gee-Gees within one with less than 30 seconds to go in the game, and then added the tying goal with one second left on the clock.

After 5 minutes of 4-on-4 overtime was unable decide a winner, the game moved to a shootout, with Queen’s coming out on top 2-0.

Nevertheless, Leger was optimistic about the result.

“This was an important point to recover. Tomorrow we look to gain two points.”

The Gee-Gees’ next game is tomorrow night when they travel to Kingston, Ont. to play the RMC Paladins (0-0 OUA) at 7:00 p.m.
