The uOttawa Athletes of the Week for September 19 are Lewis Ward of the undefeated men’s football team and Katie Phillips who started off the cross country season with a pair of strong results this weekend.
Ward was instrumental in securing an overtime win against Guelph on Saturday. The fourth-year Gee-Gee was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts in the game, kicking from distances of 39 yards, 40 yards, and 51 yards. Both the 40 and 51-yarders were under pressure – uOttawa needed the 51-yarder to push the game into overtime and the 40-yard tacked on three points in overtime. The 51 yard score is the Kingston product’s career long and tied the school record. Ward is now a perfect 7-for-7 on field goal attempts this season.
Phillips had a busy weekend, competing in both the McGill Open and the Canada Army Run. Phillips won the 5km event at the Army Run on Sunday, topping an open field by a wide margin with her time of 17:33.9. The next woman to cross the line was nearly two minutes behind Phillips. The Kleinburg, Ont. student-athlete also represented uOttawa well on Saturday, placing third at the McGill Open 4km cross country event. Her top finish helped the Gee-Gees team place fourth at the event.
