Defensive back Cédric Amessan became the first official committed recruit for the uOttawa Gee-Gees football team of 2017 on October 10, signing his LOI with head coach Jamie Barresi and defensive assistant coach Francois Rodrigue. Before joining the Gee-Gees coaching staff, Rodrigue was Amessan’s defensive coordinator at CEGEP Outaouais where the cornerback played three seasons.
“One thing I remember telling myself was that I wanted the coach to be comfortable putting me one-on-one with no help against the best receiver of any team,” remembers Amessan about his goals when starting CEGEP. "And yes, it’s a goal that I met with success. What I love the most about being a DB is to be able to anticipate and make plays on the pass and on the run. I also like getting in the head of the quarterback by giving him different looks.”
In 2016 the Gatineau native picked up 13 tackles with one interception in five games with the Griffons. In his 2015 season, Amessan ranked second on the Griffons with 25 tackles and three interceptions, and tied for the team lead with five pass breakups.
In addition to Rodrigue, several familiar faces await Amessan on the Gee-Gees sidelines. “Some of my former teammates are already on the team and I’m very excited to play with them again. I also really appreciate the hard-working mentality of the coaching staff which is a philosophy I believe in.”
Amessan’s hard-working outlook means he’s interested in team success. He notes, “I can’t really think of a football career highlights because I never won a championship. That’s a situation I hope to change with the Gee-Gees.”
Academically, the newest recruit is hoping to study finance in the Telfer School of Management.
