Game Story:

The young Gee-Gees, starting all first and second years, triumphed for the second time this weekend at the Jack Donohue tournament, tonight with a 90-59 win over Wilfrid Laurier.

It was a competitive first half between the Gee-Gees and Golden Hawks, though the Gee-Gees maintained control of the lead and were up by seven at the break.  Improving from last night, the Gee-Gees came out strong in the second half opening up to an 18 point lead during the third and 31 points in the to close the game.

Rookie Michael L’Africain (Oakville, Ont.) had a strong showing leading the Gee-Gees from the point, contributing 13 points in the win.  Second-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Gee-Gees in scoring for the second night in a row, with 21 points in tonight’s win. Second-year forward Chris Anderson (Ottawa, Ont.) also finished with impressive numbers for a second night, 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

“I thought Chris Anderson was amazing; he was everywhere tonight,” said head coach James Derouin. “It was a good team win, with four guys in double figure and two at nine [for points]; a solid team effort.”

“I thought the big moment was going into the fourth quarter, with a 12 point lead,” said Derouin, “The composure and focus in these guys is much higher than what it was at this point last year and we’re able to close out a game like this one, instead of letting them creep back in.”

Still short-benched due to injury, Derouin is “just hoping my nine guys have enough in the tank for the third win tomorrow.” The Gee-Gees will close off the tournament facing off against McGill (1-1 tournament) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Montpetit Hall.
