The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team travelled to Vancouver this weekend to take on three Canada West conference teams at the UBC Invitational. Ottawa took victories in all three games, claiming an eighth straight exhibition tournament over the past four seasons.
The garnet and grey opened with a 90-62 win over the Alberta Golden Bears. Caleb Agada led all players with 24 points and 8 steals as Ottawa used a massive 35-point third quarter to pull away for good. Brody Maracle added 12 points and six rebounds in his first CIS action as a Gee-Gee.
On Saturday, Ottawa came from behind to squeeze out an 84-77 win against the hosts. UBC led 64-58 heading into the fourth quarter and still led 77-70 with less than four minutes to play. Agada touched off a 14-0 run to close the game with a pair of free throws and gave Ottawa the lead by hitting a three-pointer after picking off a UBC entry pass.
Maracle and L’Africain were also key contributors to the late rally, with L’Africain hitting six treys in the game for 23 points and five assists. Maracle was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Sunday’s 105-72 win over the UNBC Timberwolves was all Ottawa in the second half. Leading by nine at halftime, the Gee-Gees put up 64 points over the final twenty minutes. Five players reached double-figures in scoring led by 20 points from L’Africain. Brandon Robinson notched 16, and rookie point guard Calvin Epistola knocked down 11 in 21 minutes of court time.
The Gee-Gees will take one week off before resuming exhibition action at Queen’s October 16-18. The regular season will begin at home on November 6.
