uOttawa is a season-high No. 2 in this week’s CIS Top-Ten, up from No. 4 last week.
The Gee-Gees last reached No. 2 January 31, 2006.
“I don’t think anyone in the country thought we would be number two this year,” said Gee-Gees coach Dave DeAveiro. “It’s an accomplishment but we still have a lot more to do here.”
This week’s ranking period marks the first time ever both Ottawa schools (Carleton No. 1) have been ranked 1-2 in Canada.
DeAveiro, who has a career regular season coaching record of 104-60 and is 161-103 overall in his eighth season as head coach, is six victories away from becoming the Gee-Gees all-time coaching wins leader.
Jack Eisenmann went 83-115 in the regular season and 166-221 overall while coaching Gee-Gees men’s basketball over 12 seasons from 1989-1990 to 2000-01.
The Gee-Gees, on a nine-game win streak, are 4-4 against York over the last five seasons, having out-scored the Lions 600-537.
Since 2004, the Gee-Gees are 7-1 against Laurentian and have out-scored the Voyageurs 615-520.
Fourth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe is the Gee-Gees top scorer and defender, averaging 17.5 points and 8.30 rebounds-per-game. The Toronto native’s rebounding average is the 12th highest total in Canada, while his scoring average in the 10th highest total in Ontario University Athletics.
“It is nice to see how Josh has matured over four years,” said DeAveiro. “This has helped him have success on the floor.”
Gee-Gees fourth-year transfer guard Josh Wright (Syracuse) had weekend totals of 39 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals over 46 minutes in a two-game sweep last weekend over Ryerson (98-63) and Toronto (80-72) at Montpetit Hall.
The 2009 MBNA Capital Hoops Classic games between Carleton and uOttawa in basketball will take place Wednesday, January 28 at Scotiabank Place.
The Ravens and Gee-Gees women’s teams play at 6:00 p.m. while the Carleton and uOttawa men meet at 8:00 p.m.(The Score).
