Ward shines in season opener as Gee-Gees take 77-61 victory over Mustangs

Saturday November 10, 2012

The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees took on the University of Western Mustangs on Friday night. The Gee-Gees took control of the game early on and showcased their shooting ability on the way to a sixteen point win.

The depth in the Gee-Gees roster was evident tonight as eight players were able to get on the score sheet. ‘’I think having all-round contribution will be a good weapon for us this season,’’ said head coach James Derouin post game. ''It’s important for guys to pick up the slack when others are not playing so well."

Fifth year guard Warren Ward showed no signs of rust in the first game of the season as he led the way offensively for the Gee-Gees notching 24 points and two assists while chipping in with five rebounds. Ward also showcased his ability to score baskets off the dribble as he dominated his opponents throughout the entire game while throwing down a slam dunk in the third quarter.

Ottawa had a slow start to the game, hitting zero out of four shots from beyond the arc in the first quarter. Still, they were able to take control of the game and settle into a rhythm in the second quarter as the Gee-Gees hit three straight three pointers to give them the lead heading into half-time.

The teams exchanged leads in a first half that was highlighted by slam dunks from both sides. The second half was a much more one sided affair as the Gee-Gees came out of halftime with a very dominant style of play which allowed them to take control of the game and run away with the lead. Though the Mustangs played a more competitive fourth quarter, the Gee-Gees were simply too strong as they took the victory.

The Gee-Gees will hit the court again tomorrow night as they will make the trip to Windsor to take on the Lancers, who are currently ranked ninth in the CIS Top Ten.  The game will be streamed live online (ssncanada.com) starting at 8 p.m.
