The Desjardins uOttawa female athlete of the week is also the CIS women’s soccer player of the year, Gillian Baggott. The fifth-year defender has been a key member of the Gee-Gees for the past four seasons, leading the Gee-Gees to their first OUA championship since 2006 and a fourth place finish at the 2012 CIS championships, where she was also named one of the tournaments’ All-Stars. Baggott showed why she was named the CIS player of the year over the weekend with a stellar performance on defence throughout the tournament while also chipping in offensively with a goal against Queen’s last Friday.
The Desjardins uOttawa male athlete of the week is Johnny Berhanemeskel of the men’s basketball team. The third-year guard was one of the top offensive players for the Gee-Gees over the weekend, scoring 46 points over 2 games, including a 26 point effort on Saturday night, where the Gee-Gees almost pulled off a comeback against the Windsor Lancers. The Ottawa native will look to keep the momentum going this weekend when the Gee-Gees host the McMaster Marauders this Friday in their home opener.
