Undefeated Gee-Gees topple T-Birds

The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team took a 91-63 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Friday night in the lone game of the weekend. No. 1 ranked Ottawa now sports a 14-0 regular season record with five games remaining.

Four players scored in double digits for Ottawa, led by 19 from Johnny Berhanemeskel. Caleb Agada added 18, Vikas Gill 15, and Matt Plunkett contributed 12 points from the bench, all on three-pointers.

Algoma took advantage of a flat start from the visitors, grabbing a 21-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. Terrell Campbell paced the T-birds with 22 points on the evening.

The Thunderbirds battled hard under the glass, hauling in 32 rebounds with 14 on the offensive end. Ottawa held a slim edge in total rebounds with 35, but did not take over the lead until late in the game.

At halftime Ottawa held a 40-34 lead. The Gee-Gees came out with a stronger effort on the defensive end in the third quarter while Berhanemeskel drove the lane and kicked the ball out for open threes from his team mates. Ottawa cashed four treys in the third quarter to extend the lead to 67-54.

Ottawa shot nearly fifty per cent from the floor while Algoma had a 38 per cent night.
