Trio of NCAA opponents set to visit Montpetit Hall in August

Tuesday July 10, 2012

The Gee-Gees men’s and women’s basketball teams will welcome American competition to Montpetit Hall in August, as part of an ongoing tradition of facing NCAA opponents in the preseason.

First up, the women’s team will face off against the Iona Gaels on August 16th at 6 p.m.—the Gaels were 13-18 last year, with a conference record of 8-10 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Last preseason, the Gee-Gees battled the Division I Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in a drama-filled game and lost in overtime, 61-55.

On August 19, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Runnin’ Rebels will visit Montpetit Hall at 2 p.m., to face the Gee-Gees men’s basketball team. The Running Rebels are a powerhouse in the Mountain West Conference and have made the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships in five of the last six years. This includes the 2011–12 season, when they were a six-seed in the 68-team field. This season, the Runnin’ Rebels recruited Canadian power forward Anthony Bennett to their program—Bennett is considered to be one of the top 10 players of the 2012 NCAA recruiting class.

The very next day, the Northeastern Huskies of the Colonial Athletic Association will visit uOttawa for a match at 7 p.m. Last season, the Huskies finished with a 14-17 record, including a 9-9 record against conference opponents. The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team faced the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos last preseason and lost 67-65 in a thriller of a game, in front of a packed house.
