The U Sports Top Ten rankings were released today with new polls now active for swimming and basketball. The University of Ottawa is ranked in three additional sports, bringing the total for 2016-17 to six teams.
The men’s basketball team is ranked no. 5 in the preseason poll with a 6-1 record against U Sports competition. The Gee-Gees are on a six game winning streak with tournament wins at Queen’s and at home in the Jack Donohue Memorial Tournament this past weekend. Ottawa was ranked no. 1 in the nation for six weeks during the 2015-16 season.
The men’s swim team earned the no. 7 spot in the first rankings of the season. The team has already qualified several swimmers to the national championships which will be held in February, and established a new program record in the 4x50-metre relay on Friday. Ottawa finished ninth in the team standings at the 2016 national championships.
The women’s swim team enters the top ten in no. 10, the first appearance for the team since 2014-15. A large group of young swimmers are powering the Gee-Gees to strong results early in the season, with the next stop coming at Laval on November 19.
