The Gee-Gees men’s basketball team will hit the road for one of its toughest weekend away from Montpetit Hall this regular season, taking on the CIS no. 6 ranked McMaster Marauders and no. 5 ranked Brock Badgers. Ottawa will face McMaster (9-4) on Friday and Brock (10-3) on Saturday, with both games broadcast on OUA.tv starting at 8 p.m.
no. 2 ranked Ottawa heads into the weekend leading the OUA’s overall RPI standings but with no room for error at the top. Brock ranks fourth while McMaster sits in seventh position as the teams jostle for playoff positioning. This is the only meeting of the regular season for these teams, and the Gee-Gees did not see either team during exhibition play. Ottawa is on a four-game winning streak against both the Marauders and the Badgers, dating back to November of 2011 when the home teams dispatched the visiting garnet and grey by a combined nine points.
McMaster is coming off two straight losses at Lakehead, but has had a bye week to recover and prepare to face the Gee-Gees. Veterans Leon Alexander and Aaron Redpath are the key players for the Marauders this season, with Alexander averaging 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while Redpath adds 12.9 and 6. Both players also top the team in assists and play 30 minutes per game.
At Brock, it is Dani Elgadi who must be contained. The 6-foot-7 third-year forward leads his team with 20.5 points per game but also leads the CIS with 12.4 rebounds per game. Over a quarter of Elgadi’s points have come from the free throw line where he is a 77 per cent shooter this season. Brock as a team has pulled down 45.6 rebounds per game, which also leads the CIS.
