HEADLINE: Thornhill’s Donohue tournament-winner sunk Gee-Gees
GAME STORY:
Third-year forward Matthew Thornhill hit a three-point basket with 16.6 seconds remaining for the winning basket to propel the McGill Redmen to the 2008 Jack Donohue Memorial Tip-Off tournament title with a 75-74 win over the host uOttawa Gee-Gees.

“I didn’t even hesitate,” said Thornhill. “We have been harping hard on playing together and playing hard on defence and I think that’s what did it.”

The Redmen finished the tournament 3-0 and improved to 6-2 in the pre-season after coming back from being down 12-0 to start the game.

uOttawa saw an end to a six-game pre-season win streak against CIS competition and failed to claim a third straight tournament title. Fourth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe led the Gee-Gees with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

“They made the shot at the end and we didn’t,” said Gee-Gees head coach Dave DeAveiro.

“It’s disappointing the way we lost, but they found the match-up and hit the shot.”

The chippy first quarter was punctuated by a brief shoving match between Gibson-Bascombe and fifth-year Redmen sharpshooter Moustafa El Zanaty, who was assessed a technical foul.
