Men’s Basketball (0-1 OUA)
At Brock (1-0 OUA) on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 8:00 p.m.
uOttawa – Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue 13 points, 6 rebounds; Johnny Berhanemeskel 11 points, 5 rebounds
Brock – Jameson Tipping 15 points, 5 rebounds; Mark Gibson 14 points, 9 rebounds
It was not the way the Gee-Gees would have liked to see their season open, with a 63-58 loss to Brock on the road.
A weak first half that saw the Gee-Gees only mount 18 points on the board can be largely to blame for their loss, despite a stronger second half effort. The Gee-Gees shot a low 27% from the floor, 25% from behind the arc in the first half, though improved to 40% and 41% in the second half.
Second-year forward Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue (Gatineau, Que.) led the Gee-Gees in scoring with 12 points and six rebounds in his 28 minutes of play. Second-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) also contributed 11 points and five rebounds.
“We got off to a really slow start,” said head coach James Derouin, “They were really physical with us on defence and we didn’t deal with it well. We’re a young team, and they’re a veteran, older, stronger team.”
“In the second half I thought we started to fight back a little bit and deal with the pressure,” said Derouin, noting how the team was up by one point in the last two minutes. “But we dug ourselves too deep a hole in the first half and we just ran out of gas.”
The Gee-Gees will seek that first win of the season tomorrow night, November 12 at 8:00 p.m., as they visit McMaster.
