The Gee-Gees men’s basketball program has filled the position of Lead Assistant Coach with the hiring of Ryan Barbeau. The former CIS scoring leader comes to uOttawa after four seasons as head coach at Loyalist College in his hometown of Belleville, Ont.
“At this point in my career, I wanted to make the jump to the CIS and the timing worked out really well,” explains Barbeau, who is working on his NCCP level three courses. “We were a really competitive team [at Loyalist] – we played a lot of really good, competitive games within the league which I am proud of, and that was great for my coaching development as well. Getting into a bigger city, bigger market, and a place with more exposure felt like the right thing to do.”
Barbeau played five seasons at point guard with the Western Mustangs and garnered OUA West All-Star accolades in both 2009-10 and his final season, 2011-12. That year, he played 35 minutes per game en route to a 24.2 points per game scoring average. He was recognized by Western with the team’s MVP award as well as the award for community involvement, academics and leadership.
Before starting his coaching career at Loyalist, Barbeau played professionally in Germany with Baskets Vilsbiburg before injuries curtailed him midway through his first year. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Philosophy from Western.
