The no. 5 nationally ranked Gee-Gees men’s basketball team will open the regular season on Saturday night, one of the last teams to start up play in the OUA. Their opponents, the Algoma Thunderbirds, have already played three games and earned a victory against Laurier last weekend.
Ottawa had a weekend off after wrapping up the preseason with a 6-1 record against U Sports opponents, but practiced thoughought the most recent weekend to fine-tune for the regular season. The team will fly to Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday morning for the matchup, which is the only one of the weekend.
“They’re a tough squad defensively and they are tougher at home - we didn’t play well there last time,” notes Gee-Gees head coach James Derouin, referring to a game which Ottawa won 91-63 after trailing 21-18 in the first quarter. The Gee-Gees only other appearance at the George Leach Centre was a 96-82 win in 2014 – the closest margin of victory in the teams’ four historical meetings.
Algoma has done a nice job this season of taking care of the basketball, committing the third fewest turnovers per game at 13.7. Reigning CIS Defensive Player of the Year, Caleb Agada, may have something to say about that. Agada is begininng his fifth season in garnet and grey with confidence. “The mental aspect of the game is what I’ve been working on,” he says. “Being a leader and feeling comfortable in that role, playing without being nervous. I think I’ve been doing a better job.”
