Hosting Laurentian (7-15 OUA, 0-0 playoffs) for OUA East quarter final playoffs on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. at Montpetit Hall. (Rogers Cable 22, SSN Canada)
It’s crunch time for the garnet and grey and there’s no room for errors as the Gee-Gees host Laurentian for an OUA East quarter final playoff game, where the winner moves on and the loser heads home.
“We’re ready,” said head coach James Derouin, “We just got to defend. Laurentian’s a very gifted offensive team, they got shooters and more shooters and more shooters.”
The Gee-Gees triumphed over the Voyageurs in both their regular season match-ups, first 87-84 at home on January 22 and then 86-72 at Laurentian on February 5.
“We’re excited, and glad we’re hosting,” continued Derouin, “An 11-11 [record] on the season may not be where we wanted to be, but third place in our division and hosting a first round playoff game versus the sixth place team is where we wanted to be. And we’re happy about that. And now we just have to take advantage of the situation we’ve put ourselves in.”
The Gee-Gees closed their regular season against No. 1 nationally and in the OUA East Carleton Ravens, giving the Ravens a run for their money despite the 81-60 loss.
Third-year guard Warren Ward, London, Ont., closed the regular season ninth in OUA scoring leaders with 16.80 points per game, followed closely by first-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel, Ottawa, Ont., in 12thwith 16.00 points per game, the second-highest rookie. Berhanemeskel finished third in three-point percentage (46%), the highest rookie, and with the highest number of three-point completions at 64.
With the opportunity to host Laurentian at home, the Gee-Gees will be counting on their home court advantage and fan support in Wednesday’s 8:00 p.m. playoff game against Laurentian!
