Second-year power forward Warren Ward scored 22 points Sunday in a 74-73 season-opening exhibition loss for Gee-Gees men’s basketball against an overworked St. John’s University team at Montpetit Hall.

The Red Storm earned its fourth victory in 24 hours, following a 71-54 victory Sunday afternoon against defending CIS champion Carleton, and wins Saturday against McGill (90-55) and UQAM (104-66) in Montreal.

“That is a tired team,” said Gee-Gees head coach Dave DeAveiro.

“We are trying something completely different this season … and made a lot of mistakes, but those are things we can fix.”

Ward had 12 points in the first half as the Gee-Gees pulled to a 38-36 advantage at the break.

“We’re coming,” said Ward. ‘I love my group and I am ready to go.”

uOttawa played the Red Storm, which had 13 steals to uOttawa’s seven and 35 rebounds to the Gee-Gees 26, for the first time in program history.
