HEADLINE: Mustangs gallop over Gee-Gees
Fifth-year forward Bradley Smith had 19 points in 18 minutes Friday as the unranked Western Mustangs surprised No. 9 Ottawa with a 73-53 season-opening home victory.
Rookie forward Warren Ward led Ottawa with 16 points and six rebounds, but contributed four turnovers along with fifth-year post Dax Dessureault, who had 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Gee-Gees, off a 6-1 pre-season against CIS competition, allowed an early 8-2 lead to evaporate to a four-point deficit (29-24) at the half.
“Lack of competitiveness, lack of desire, emergency, desperation, any of those words,” said Gee-Gees head coach Dave DeAveiro. “We just didn’t play with them”
Fourth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe had an off season-opening night, contributing 10 points with four rebounds in 15 minutes for uOttawa.
The Gee-Gees visit Windsor (1-0) Saturday, November 8 (8:00 p.m.).
